How to holiday on a budget

It’s hard to deny that things are feeling tight for all of us right now, and of course we know that even considering a holiday is a luxury that many can not even consider right now.

But there are ways that you can enjoy some quality time with the people you love on a budget …. we want to share some of our favourites with you all.

Have a plan

It may seem basic, but planning a detailed itinerary of your trip can be a real help, knowing what you plan to do, eat and how you plan to get places enables you to define a budget ahead of your trip and stick to it.

Many visitor attractions, restaurants and public transport companies advertise their pricing and fares online, this allows you to have a pretty realistic idea of potential spending ahead of your trip.

The most important part of the plan is to ensure you are disciplined and stick to your plan, it’s also important to ensure you have a small contingency fund … because who can’t turn down an off the cuff sweet treat or ice cream.

Book in advanced

Many places offer ‘early bird discount’ for customers looking to book in advanced (think 9-12 months ahead)  you can get some really great deals, from accommodation to attractions.

Or if you can hold your nerve, particularly for accommodation, you can also get some amazing last minute savings (think booking one day ahead) Equally many independent accommodation providers, will also share cancellations and last minute deals on their social media account. So if you have your heart set on a particular place, it’s a great idea to follow them on socials ahead of time.

Transport

Getting about during your trip can be expensive, where possible avoid using taxi’s and costly car parks when driving. Alternatives to look out for include park and ride, particularly when travelling into a city. Travel passes and public transport, and even look into hiring a bike or e-scooter.

Food & Drink

Eating out on holiday can be expensive, of course we encourage you all to support local and enjoy local delicacies whilst you’re away, but we also encourage moderation. Its easy to eat our for breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst you’re away from home, but over the course of a week this can add up. By opting for self-catering options or half-board options you can stock up your cupboards with your normal staples and enjoy a home-made meal once or twice a day.
